Secret #2 - Be Safe with Stress!

Creating stress can be a good thing. Stress is a component of every good workout. Stress also has the potential to produce a negative or bad outcome, especially if you are not taking into account all the factors that go into making a safe and effective workout.

Each exercise you choose will produce stress in a unique risk-to-reward ratio. An exercise like walking has a very low risk factor with great rewards. It’s very safe and does not require taking into account all the safety considerations of a workout.

If you wanted to increase the stress level (and thereby structure a more effective workout), you could decide to go for a run. This changes the risk-to-reward factor. Running, compared to walking, is an increased risk (high-impact, excessive joint stress) with similar or decreased reward (depending on your fitness level). Make sure the risk to reward factor is in line with your goals and fitness level! As the level of stress rises, so does the risk of injury if not performed properly.

It is important to weigh out the risk vs. reward for each workout/exercise you engage in. Find a program and exercises that agrees with your body and slowly build up from there. If your workouts are overly intense and you find no improvement, you may be overtraining! The stress may accumulate and increase the likelihood of injury. Proper rest is needed to allow the joints and muscles to recover.

Working out doesn’t have to be stressful,

or something to cross out of your to-do-list.

Find an activity that you find fun and engaging!

Whether it’s hiking, swimming or a game of badminton, make it part of your routine!

Consider the risk vs. reward to see if a given exercise is right for your body,

or consult a doctor or trainer before starting.
